August 2013 - Hazard Communication

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for some upcoming dates concerning the new Global Harmonization System (GHS) implementation. Employers must insure that all employees must have received adequate training by December 1st of 2013 to include the new labeling requirements and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) format.

Manufactures, importers, distributors and employers must comply with all of the modified provisions of the final rule by June 1st of 2015, with the exception that existing material may be shipped under the old system up to 1 December 2015.

All aspects of the new rule must be fully implemented by June 1st of 2016. This includes alternative labeling and hazard communication programs as necessary, and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.

Historically, the Hazcom standard has been one of the most frequently cited standards year after year. The implementation of the Globally Harmonized System should help to simplify the labeling and training requirements.

Remember, SCATS teaches in-depth classes on both Hazard Communications and Safety Data Sheets.  We also have training materials such as quick cards and DVDs available for your use.  The Federal OSHA website at, www.osha.gov, also has many tools to help employers comply with the new standard.  For more information, this website also has a listing of our classes and the upcoming schedule.
