April has been designated for the fourteenth consecutive year by SCATS as Hispanic Safety month in Nevada. There were a total of 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2016, a 7 percent increase from the 4,836 fatal injuries reported in 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This is the third consecutive increase in annual workplace fatalities and the first time more than 5,000 fatalities have been recorded by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) since 2008. The fatal injury rate increased to 3.6 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers from 3.4 in 2015, the highest rate since 2010.
Nationally, the Hispanic workforce experiences a high number of injuries and fatalities on the job. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Reported 879 fatal work injuries involving Hispanic or Latino workers in 2016-on average, more than 17 deaths a week or two and one half Latino workers killed every single day of the year, all year long.
SCATS will be providing free workplace safety classes in Spanish upon request throughout the year in Reno and Las Vegas to educate Nevada’s Hispanic employees about safety in the workplace.
